After almost all parties in Tamil Nadu announced their candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress has named its contestants for eight out 10 seats it bagged from DMK.
K Jayakumar has been fielded from Tiruvallur, Chellakumar from Krishnagiri, M K Vishnu Prasad from Arani, Jothi Mani from Karur, S Thirunavukkarasar from Tiruchirappalli, EVKS Elangovan from Theni, Manickam Tagore from Virudhunagar and H Vasanthakumar from Kanyakumari.
The Congress on Friday released the seventh list of its 35 candidates for the April-May Lok Sabha election and shifted Uttar Pradesh state unit chief Raj Babbar from Moradabad to Fatehpur Sikri.
The party fielded former Union Minister Renuka Chowdhury from Khammam in Telangana. The party also fielded Vikramaditya Singh, the son of former Union Minister Karan Singh, from Udhampur constituency in Jammu and Kashmir. The Congress also released a list of 54 candidates for Odisha Assembly election.
Earlier, the party received applications from 250 aspirants from Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, former MP Peter Alphonse represented to the TNCC president that minorities be given adequate representation in the ticket distribution.
Alphonse said, “Minorities believe that Congress is the only party that takes care of minorities, who also form a core vote bank for the party historically. It should be ensured that no community is over-represented and there should be an equitable distribution of seats.”
The Congress, the DMK’s largest ally in Tamil Nadu, had been unable to finalise its list of candidates for the nine Lok Sabha constituencies allotted to it, as there are too many aspirants for some seats.
