CM’s Pongal gift: Rs 1,000 to all ration cardholders in TN

The Tamil Nadu government will give Rs 1,000 and a gift hamper to ration cardholders for the Tamil harvest festival Pongal in 2020 also, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has said.

Explaining the rationale behind the gift scheme, Palaniswami said it was implemented a year ago to “mitigate the sufferings” of farmers and general public.

He added that the gift hamper would each contain 1 kg raw rice and sugar, raisins, cardamom and sugarcane. These ingredients are used to prepare the sweet dish – Pongal.

“We are implementing what we have announced and we will go by the welfare of the people,” he emphasised while formally inaugurating Kallakurichi the 34th district of TN in neighbouring Villupuram district.

Speaking after inaugurating Kallakurichi as the 34th district of the State, Palaniswami said various welfare schemes for the benefit of the farmers were announced and implemented by the government.

”Kudimaramathu scheme, construction of check dams at a cost of Rs 600 crore and crop insurance are some of the notable schemes,” he pointed out. He further said a food park will be set up at Tindivanam where farmers can sell their products at a nominal price.

This time, though there have been good rains, farmers have spent on farm inputs and many poor families were suffering due to financial constraints, and therefore the initiative was being extended for 2020 also, he  said.

The Government wanted the people to enjoy the harvest festival of Pongal (mid-January) and has accordingly decided to make the Pongal gift hampers available for rice cardholders this year too, he said.
