CM Vijay calls for stronger state empowerment, unveils $1.5-trillion economic vision for 2036

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday emphasized the importance of cooperative federalism and called for greater autonomy and empowerment for states, stating that India’s progress depends on the strength and development of its individual states.

Speaking at the 11th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog in New Delhi, Vijay highlighted the need for collaboration between the Centre and the states, stressing that mutual trust, shared responsibility, and constructive partnerships are essential for achieving inclusive and sustainable national growth.

Making his first appearance at a national policy forum since taking office as Chief Minister, Vijay presented Tamil Nadu’s long-term economic roadmap, setting a target of transforming the state into a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. He noted that the government’s development agenda focuses on four key groups — youth, women, farmers, and economically disadvantaged communities — while complementing the broader goals of national development.

Vijay on Wednesday called on President Droupadi Murmu and Vice President C P Radhakrishnan in New Delhi. Official sources described the meetings as courtesy calls. The CM was in the national capital where he will attend the meeting of the Governing Council of the Niti Aayog on Thursday.
