CM Stalin releases Cauvery water from Kallanai
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin opened the sluice gates of the Kallanai Dam (also known as Grand Anicut) on Sunday, June 15, 2025, to release water for irrigation in the Cauvery Delta districts of Tamil Nadu.
This action marks the beginning of the irrigation season for the Kuruvai paddy crop and preparations for the Samba crop, which are vital for the agricultural economy of the region. Water released from the Mettur Dam on June 12, 2025, had reached Kallanai, enabling this release.
This is the first time M.K. Stalin, as Chief Minister, has released water from the Kallanai barrage.
During the ceremony, he showered flower petals and paddy seeds onto the gushing waters, a traditional gesture.
He also held a review meeting with District Collectors of the Cauvery delta districts to oversee desilting works and ensure the availability of agricultural inputs for farmers.
