CM seeks urgent steps from PM to release TN fishermen from Iran

Chief minister J Jayalalithaa today brought to the notice of prime minister Narendra Modi the pathetic plight of five fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were arrested and detained by the Iranian Coast Guard. In a letter to the PM, she said they were engaged in fishing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on contract basis under the sponsorship of a Saudi national, Thiru Ali Zhurohi. "These five fishermen from Kanniyakumari District of Tamil Nadu ventured for fishing in a mechanised fishing boat bearing registration No.11457 from Qatif fishing base of Saudi Arabia on 23.4.2016. During the course of their fishing operations they inadvertently strayed into Iranian waters and were arrested and detained by the Iranian Coast Guard on 24.4.2016. The above five Indian fishermen are lodged in Central jail, Dehloran, Iran," she said. "I bring this matter to your notice seeking your immediate and personal intervention to instruct the Embassy of India in Tehran and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to take effective legal steps to secure the immediate release of these poor innocent fishermen from Tamil Nadu," she added.
