Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today opened the sluice gates of Mettur dam to release water.

He was accompanied by Ministers K A Sengottaiyan, P Thangamani, V Saroja, K P Anbalagan,K C Karupannan and M R Vijayabhaskar.

Speaking on the occasion, he said it was the AIADMK which safeguarded the state’s rights and ensured that Tamil Nadu got its share from Cauvery.

Last week, the CM announced that Cauvery water from Mettur dam will be released for irrigation purpose 19 July.

In a statement, he said as the southwest monsoon intensified in the catchment areas of cauvery delta region, the water level in the Mettur dam increased substantially and stood at 89.18 ft today. The inflow into the dam was 99,372 cusecs and it has a storage of 51.72 tmcft.

He said a decision to release water from the Mettur dam was taken at a meeting chaired by him and attended by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, senior Ministers and those from the delta districts and higher officials at the State Secretariat.

The release of water would help fill up 700 water bodies in delta districts, Palaniswami said.

“I have directed the agriculture department to store adequate quantity of long-duration paddy variety seeds like CR 1009, CR 1009 sub1, and ADT 49 in all agriculture extension centres in the delta districts,” he said.

Already, with the level in Mettur reservoir crossing 80 feet and water release imminent, farmers in Tiruchy have started preliminary works for the samba season.

According to the Agriculture department, samba cultivation in the district is likely to be taken up in about 50,000 hectares, which is much larger than previous year. Meanwhile, banana cultivation in the region is seeing a gradual increase this year.
