Four people have died in Chennai, two each in Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, one in Villupuram and one in Nagapattinam. Tamil Nadu chief minister O Pannerselvam has announced compensation.

In a statement, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam said over 4,000 trees fell.

The Tamil Nadu government declared Tuesday would be a holiday for educational institutions in three districts.

“All government, government-aided, private schools, colleges and other educational institutions in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts will remain closed on December 13,” an official release said.

Pannerselvam said more than 10,000 people have been evacuated from near the sea. Over 9,000 people were moved to relief camps in Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile shops and hotels opened their shutters in the morning as usual. Some hotels refused to accept debit/credit cards for payment saying the point-of-sale terminals were not working
