A nine-year-old girl fell from the fourth floor of her school and died later in the hospital.
The child, Logamithra, 9, of SRM Nightingale School in West Mambalam was taken to a private hospital in Vadapalani but she died without responding to treatment.
She suffered severe injuries on the head. Police said Logamithra’s classroom was on the third floor. It was not immediately known why she went to the terrace at 2:30 pm.
“We usually keep the door to the terrace closed. But it was open today for some cleaning work,” a staff of the school was quoted as saying.
Incidentally, the school had asked parents to collect the progress report of their children before Ayudha Puja holidays.
The girl’s father Ilango is a betel leaves vendor and her mother Silambarasi is working in a private company in Porur. The couple has one more child.
The school management said the girl had gone to the terrace without informing anyone. “We guessed that she had gone upstairs to relieve herself but had slipped and fallen. Since no one was upstairs, we do not know how she slipped. She was taken to SIMS Hospital and was given the best care possible,” said Sethuraman, a management representative.
