Clashes in Cuddalore, over 50 arrested

Clashes broke out in Cuddalore after the murder of a local leader. Clashes allegedly broke out between two groups. Over 25 fishing boats were torched by the rioters.

Besides, many vehicles and huts were also set ablaze. Police arrested over 50 for rioting and arson. Police personnel were also deployed for security in the area after the clashes.

Thirty-six year old Madhivanan, brother of a former Panchayat union leader, was killed when he was returning home. His body has been sent for post-mortem to the Villupuram Government Hospital.

Police said seven people were held responsible for the murder and five of them have been arrested till now. Close to 50 police officers from Villupuram have been deployed near the hospital to avoid any untoward incident.

The clashes broke out at 10 pm in the coastal village of Thazhanguda and at least 20 fishing boats, two-wheelers and cars were set on fire by the supporters of the deceased. Houses were also reportedly ransacked and set ablaze by the miscreants.

Police said long-standing political rivalry between families of Masilamani and the current panchayat president led to tension in the area. Local body polls for panchayat unions were held in December last year. Section 107 (security for keeping the peace in other cases) of the Criminal Procedure Code was invoked against members of both the groups by the police in January.
