Civic polls: Filing of nomination ends, campaign shifts to feverish mode

Filing of nominations for the local body polls came to an end on Monday evening. Following this, the state election commission has convened an all-party meeting in Chennai on Tuesday.

State Election Commission has directed 35 poll observers to report at their districts of posting. SEC, in an official release, said it has directed poll observers–27 IAS officials and eight District Revenue Officers– to be stationed at their respective districts by Tuesday.

Elections will be held to over 1.31 lakh civic body posts, including 1,18,974 posts in rural and 12,820 posts in urban local bodies.

Counting of votes will be taken up on October 21. Scrutiny of nominations will be taken up today.

The last date for withdrawal of nominations is on October 6. In the first phase (October 17), polling will be done in 10 city corporations in the state, barring Chennai and Dindigul.

The first council and oath taking ceremony for all directly elected members will need to happen on October 26, the SEC said, adding that indirect elections to the posts of mayors, municipality chairmen and other local body chiefs and deputy chiefs, a procedure which has come into effect from this time, will be held on November 2.
