Chongqing Mayor in Chennai, gets to know about Amma Canteens

Chongqing Mayor in Chennai, gets to know about Amma Canteens: Chongqing Mayor Huang Qifan met Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy on Friday at Ripon Buildings. He invited delegates from Chennai for the China International Friendship Cities Conference 2016 to be held in Chongqing from November 9 to 11.

A six-member delegation from the southwest province of Chongqing on Friday met corporation officials at Ripon Buildings, offering help in urban planning and road projects.

Duraisamy stressed the need for using technology adopted in Chongqing to deal with solid waste management in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi. Delegates from Chongqing discussed various welfare measures such as Amma Canteens.

Chennai has 307 Amma canteens, offering food to more than two lakh residents per day. Officials from Chongqing are likely to study the welfare scheme for implementation.

The two cities are governed by vastly different political systems, but urban planners believe the tie-up could still be fruitful.

Chennai established a sister city relationship with the Chinese city of Chongqing. An agreement to this effect was signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his three-day visit to China last year.
