Chinmayi Sripaada speaks about online abuse targeting her family
Singer and voice actor Chinmayi Sripaada has spoken about the sustained online harassment directed at her family, revealing that the abuse eventually prompted her husband, filmmaker Rahul Ravindran, to leave the social media platform X.
In a video shared online, Chinmayi discussed issues such as misogyny, consent and rape culture, saying these subjects cannot be separated from conversations about sexual violence.
She explained that harmful behaviour often begins with sexist jokes, abusive language, revenge pornography and the circulation of unsolicited explicit content before escalating into more serious forms of violence.
Chinmayi said that even her comments about teaching children the importance of consent attracted widespread hostility. Over time, she and Rahul became frequent targets of abusive messages, including personal attacks and derogatory remarks.
She also criticised comments questioning why Rahul continued to support her, saying such reactions reflected entrenched patriarchal attitudes. According to Chinmayi, trolls also targeted Rahul’s masculinity because he publicly stood by her.
The singer said the abuse intensified after Rahul remarked that isolated crimes against men should not be equated with the broader issue of systemic violence against women. She alleged that the backlash included coordinated attacks and even messages wishing harm upon their young children.
