Chief Minister MK Stalin stunned in Kolathur, loses to TVK candidate

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has lost to VS Babu, the candidate fielded by actor-politician Vijay’s TVK in the Kolathur constituency for the 2026 Assembly elections in the state.

The outcome came as the debutant outfit stunned the entire country by emerging as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu.

For a seat that Stalin has represented since 2011 and won by massive margins in the past, this reversal is being seen as the ultimate symbol of the “Vijay wave” that has swept the state today.

In the past Kolathur has been a DMK stronghold, with Stalin holding the seat since 2011. That year, he won by under 3,000 votes against AIADMK’s Saidai Duraisamy.

In 2016, he won by over 37,000 votes against JCD Prabhakar, and by around 70,000 votes in 2021 against Adhi Rajaram.

As of 4.15 pm, the TVK won 11 seats and was leading on 96 other constituencies. Meanwhile, the ruling DMK had emerged victorious in 4 seats and was ahead in 67 others.

The majority mark for the formation of government in Tamil Nadu is 118. Elections to all 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu were held in a single phase on April 23.
