Chidambaram seeks bail, makes shocking charge against CBI

Former Finance Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has alleged that the INX Media case is “political vendetta” and the investigation agency is “acting on the behest of the Centre”.

In his bail plea filed before the Delhi High Court, he said, “It is the petitioner’s case that the instant criminal proceeding is a mala fide and is borne out of political vendetta and the investigation agency is acting at the behest of the Centre which wants to malign the untainted and unimpeachable reputation of the peititoner.”

Chidambaram, who has been under detention for 21 days in connection with the INX Media case, approached the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking regular bail.

Chidambaram, in his petitions that also challenged a trial court order remanding him in judicial custody till September 19, has said that he is being prosecuted for his being a political opponent of the party in power.

The 73-year old Congress leader was arrested by the CBI on August 21. The trial court had earlier said that the allegations against Chidambaram were found serious, therefore, he was remanded to police custody.

Chidambaram has moved two applications before the high court, one for seeking regular bail and another for seeking setting aside of the order on September 5 passed by the trial court that sent him to 14 days’ judicial custody.

Chidambaram said he is a senior spokesperson of the Congress and has been vocal, both in his speeches and writings, in his opposition to the BJP-led coalition government.

“As far as FIPB cases were concerned, the petitioner (Chidambaram) approved only those cases that were recommended by the FIPB and put up to the petitioner by the Secretary, Economic Affairs,” the petition said.
