Chennai’s Covid-19 cases see slight rise

The number of daily Covid-19 deaths reported by Tamil Nadu was below 60 for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Chennai reported 992 fresh cases (983 on Wednesday) and 12 deaths. Its neighbouring districts – Chengalpet (283), Tiruvallur (239) and Kancheepuram (187) – together reported 709 cases and a dozen deaths. The active cases in the region were 15,194 including 9,874 in Chennai.

According to the State Health Department, 82,683 persons were tested in the 24-hour period. While 5,524 patients were cured and discharged, 59 new Covid-19-related deaths were reported in the period.

The total number of cases in the state stands at 525,420. While 4,70,192 people have been cured and discharged so far. 8,618 people have succumbed to the disease.

Chennai continued to head the Covid-19 infection table with 992 persons testing positive for the virus, taking the total tally in the state capital to 152,567.

The districts of Cuddalore and Coimbatore on Thursday witnessed 206 and 530 new cases, respectively. As many as 59 Covid-19 patients died today, taking the total number of fatalities in the State due to the pandemic to 8,618.

On the positive side, the bulletin said 5,524 patients were discharged from various hospitals in Tamilnadu Thursday. With this, the total number of recoveries in the State has touched 4,70,192.
