Chennai weather alert: Heavy monsoon rain expected as IMD issues yellow warning
Chennai and several neighbouring districts are likely to experience another spell of intense monsoon rainfall from Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of heavy showers over the coming four days. The city could see a mix of sunshine and cloudy conditions during the day, followed by light rain in some areas on Thursday night.
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Chennai and surrounding districts, forecasting rainfall of 6–12 cm within 24 hours in affected areas. Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible as the weather system develops.
The rain is linked to a low-pressure area that originated over the southwest Bay of Bengal before moving towards the Comorin region and adjoining areas of southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala. An associated cyclonic circulation extends to around 5.8 km above mean sea level, supporting the formation of rain-bearing clouds.
According to an IMD official, the system could move northwards, increasing the likelihood of rain across Chennai and nearby regions. Friday may bring moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Cloud cover is expected to keep daytime temperatures around 31–32°C, while night-time temperatures may remain between 25°C and 26°C.
The weather department has forecast heavy rainfall across 26 districts on Friday, including Chennai and Tiruvallur. Between October 24 and 26, the warning is expected to extend to Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and several delta and interior districts.
An orange alert has also been issued for districts along the Western Ghats from October 23 to 26, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Residents are advised to follow official weather updates and take precautions during periods of heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning.
