Chennai roads choke with traffic due to protest & VVIP visits

All hell broke loose on Chennai roads on Monday morning, after arterial streches choked with traffic due to a protest by MDMK and other reasons.

Those using Sardar Patel Road, Anna Salai and Taluk Office Road near the Raj Bhavan were in for a hard time as traffic in the stretch came to a halt due to the protest led by MDMK demanding Governor Banwarilal Purohit issue orders to release the seven convicts in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.

While, this protest led to the traffic pile up on one side, vehicles were stopped from proceeding on OMR as Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam took part in a hospital inauguration function.

Recently, Thevar Jayanthi celebrations in Chennai caused traffic congestion on the arterial roads, including the Anna Salai and the Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road.

Also, holidays such as Ayudha Pooja and Deepavali too caused traffic jams, after people from various parts of the state reached Chennai after spending holidays in their hometowns.

Meanwhile, traffic congestion due to the ongoing construction of a flyover along Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road is a major inconvenience for motorists heading to the Chennai airport from the southern suburbs of the city.
