Continuing with their efforts to bring down the crime rate, the Chennai City Police conducted a storming operation for the second successive day and detained nearly 500 people on various charges.
According to sources, 442 persons were detained under suspicion while conducting searches at places including lodges, and commercial establishments. Another 20 indivduals were detained under the Non Bailable Warrant.
During the operation, seven persons who were remaining elusive from the police radar and involved in various cases were apprehended. Another 95 persons were booked under CrPC sections 109 and 110.
Sources said as part of the operation, carried out on the directions of Chennai City Police Commissioner A K Viswanathan in the wake increasing incidents of chain and mobile phone snatching incidents, police intensified patrolling across the city.
Starting Monday night, the police started sanitising the whole city and conducted searches at multiple places.
The police had detained little over 3,000 persons including for suspicious behaviour, repeated offenders, non Bailable Warrant accuseds.
During the night-long operation, 442 people on suspicious grounds and 20 people against whom NBWs were pending, were arrested.
Sources said during the operation, seven absconding criminals were arrested, while 95 people were detailed under Sec 109, 110 of CrPC.
