Chennai Photo Biennale Edition 4: A Celebration of Photography and Visual Storytelling

The much-anticipated Chennai Photo Biennale (CPB) Edition 4 opens on 20th December 2024, with its thematic inquiry “Why Photograph?”. This biennale brings together over 20 exhibitions and programs, featuring groundbreaking works that explore diverse narratives and reshape our understanding of photography.

Chennai Photo Biennale Edition 4 is made possible with the generous support of Goethe-Institut Chennai as the Primary Partner, in association with The Hindu – Made of Chennai. TNQ Publishing and Photo South Asia join as Palladium Partners.

Highlights of the December Lineup:

  1. “Vaanyerum Vizhuthugal” (Roots that reach for the sky)
     A tribute to Tamil Nadu’s vibrant photographic talent, this exhibition showcases the works of 12 lens-based artists. Curated by Jaisingh Nageswaran, the exhibit delves into personal and cultural narratives through evocative imagery. A project by CPB Foundation in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Chennai In association with The Hindu, Made of Chennai

  2. “It’s time. To see. To be seen.”
     A powerful showcase of women photographers from India and across the globe, this exhibition celebrates their responses to the world through lens-based practices. It highlights their unique perspectives, bridging cultures and experiences. A CPB Foundation project made possible in collaboration with Goethe-Institute Chennai, British Council, Institut Francais, and Pro Helvetia.

  3. “Madras, Margazhi & Music” Portraits by Amar Ramesh
     A nostalgic series capturing the essence of Chennai’s Margazhi season through the lens of Amar Ramesh, celebrating the city’s cultural heritage.

  4. “CommonNouns”
     An intriguing showcase at Raw Mango Store, blending fashion and photography to explore the intersection of everyday objects and narratives.

  5. “Light Salt Water” by Sujatha Shankar Kumar
     A poignant exploration of the interconnectedness of nature, light, and water, this exhibition invites viewers into a meditative visual experience.

The Biennale is a 90-day cultural extravaganza (Dec 2024 – March 2025) that transforms Chennai into a canvas for visual storytelling, featuring retrospectives, site-specific installations, and thought-provoking invited projects. With its diverse and powerful lineup, CPB4 promises to be an unmissable celebration of art and culture.
