The number of fresh Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu were seven short of 7,000 on Monday, pushing the total tally to 2,20,716. The state reported 77 deaths that took the cumulative toll to 3,521.
As many as 5,723 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours and 54,896 patients were still under treatment.
Chennai recorded 1,138 cases today, taking the total cases
to 95,857. The metropolis is expected to cross the 1 lakh mark by the end of this week.
The neighbouring district of Chengalpet recorded and Tiruvallur recorded cases in excess of 400, while Kancheepuram reported 362 cases.
Chief Minister Eddapadi K Palaniswami on Monday launched a free mask distribution scheme that will benefit over 69 lakh families in the first phase as part of measures to fight COVID-19.
The Chief Minister distributed masks to five people at the Secretariat, marking the inauguration of the first phase of the scheme, where masks will be given to beneficiaries through ration shops.
With 566 new cases, the Central region of Tamil Nadu crossed the 11,000 cases mark. Trichy recorded 188 cases, Thanjavur 153, Pudukottai 98, Tiruvarur 67, Ariyalur 48, Perambalur 21, Nagapattinam 22, and Karur 7.
