Chennai airport receives bomb threat via mail
Chennai International Airport was plunged into a state of heightened security on Sunday morning after authorities received an anonymous bomb threat via email.
The threat, which claimed that explosives had been planted within the airport premises, triggered a comprehensive security operation, though it was later declared a hoax.
The alarm was raised around 10:00 AM when the office of the Chennai Airport Director received the email. While the message asserted that bombs would explode and cause widespread damage, it lacked specific details regarding targeted flights or precise locations within the airport complex.
Upon receiving the threat, an emergency meeting of the Chennai Airport Security Committee was immediately convened, chaired by the Airport Director. Senior officials from various agencies, including the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), airline representatives, Chennai Airport senior management, Chennai Airport Police, and commando units, participated in the urgent deliberations.
Given the vague nature of the threat, security forces implemented a thorough response plan. Enhanced surveillance was deployed across the entire airport premises.
Bomb disposal squads and sniffer dog teams conducted intensive, multi-location sweeps throughout the terminals, cargo areas, aircraft fuel stations, and vehicle parking areas. Passengers faced stricter than usual security checks as a precautionary measure.
