Centre accepts TN’s request to extend Chief Secretary M Sai Kumar’s tenure by six months

The Union government has approved a six-month extension for Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary M. Sai Kumar, allowing him to continue in office from September 1, 2026, until February 28, 2027.

The approval follows a request sent by the Tamil Nadu government in June seeking an extension beyond his scheduled retirement on August 31. According to the official communication issued by the Ministry of Personnel on July 15, the extension will cover the northeast monsoon period.

Sai Kumar was appointed Chief Secretary by the Election Commission during the Assembly election period, replacing N. Muruganandam.

Despite several administrative reshuffles after the TVK government assumed office, Sai Kumar has continued as the state’s top bureaucrat. Over his career, he has served in several key departments and was Secretary-I to former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
