Central government issues new ‘regulations’ for OTT platforms

The Central government has announced a three-tier mechanism for OTT & digital media platforms.

Announcing the policy, I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar said that they have fought for the freedom of the press during the emergency but added that all freedom must come with restrictions.

The Minister said that there has to be some self-regulations and the body should be headed by a retired Supreme Court or High Court judge.

He further added that there will be an oversight mechanism at the government level to deal with the case wherein immediate action is needed.

The all-new Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediary and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, will bring social media and streaming services under a regulatory framework.

The document lays down rules and general principles for offering safeguards in relation to digital and online media.
