Cauvery issue: Farmers launch rail roko with support of political parties

Backed by various Opposition parties, thousands of Delta farmers in Tamil Nadu are staging a 48-hour rail roko agitation across the state on Monday and Tuesday over the Cauvery issue.

Parties like the main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Congress, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Communist Party of India (Marxist), CPI and Naam Tamizhar had already declared their support.

“Accepting the letter given by farmers bodies seeking DMK’s support and participation, it has been decided to support and participate in the proposed 48-hour rail roko demonstration in Tamil Nadu on October 17, 18 to urge the Centre to immediately constitute the Cauvery Management Board,” a DMK release said.

The two-day strike has been called by various farmers’ organisations to condemn the Centre’s stance in the Supreme Court against setting up of the Cauvery Management Board and to urge the state government to convene an all-party meeting and a special session of the Assembly for adopting a resolution against the NDA-led Union government over the Cauvery issue.

The Federation of Farmers’ Associations has called out to more people and organisations to be a part of the rail roko.

Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G.K. Vasan has also extended his party’s support to the rail roko called for by various farmer associations on October 17 and 18 to condemn the Centre on the Cauvery issue.
