Campaign ends for first phase civic polls in TN

Villages and rural areas witnessed a hectic campaign on Wednesday as candidates made a last-ditch attempt to win over the electorate on the final electioneering day for the first phase of local body polls.

The local body polls, which are to be held in two phases – December 27 and 30, and the district administrations had moved polling materials, staff and the police to the respective polling stations.

The officials said that the polling materials were moved in the evening to the respective stations with adequate police security. Already, the police had identified vulnerable stations and locations based on the past elections.

Camaraderie was visible among those contesting for ward member posts in villages. In Kanyakumari, candidates hired a common vehicle and microphone to campaign in wards of Vanniyoor panchayat in Vilavancode taluk at Kaliyakavilai in Tamil Nadu Kerala border.

The Election Commission has been making various arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the polls on 27 December. Sources said that the places where the polls will be held have been brought under tight security blanket. Around 60,000 cops have been deployed for duty.

About 2,30,000 voters are in the fray for the rural body election which will be held in two phases. The second phase election will be held on 30 December. The votes will be counted on 2 January and the results will be announced on the same day. Winners will assume office on 6 Januar
