Filing of nomination for the May 19 bypolls to four Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu ended on Monday. The scrutiny would take place today and the last date of withdrawals is May 2.
With the DMK and the AMMK announcing their candidates already, the ruling AIADMK and Kamal Haasan’s AMMK named their contestants recently.
AIADMK Coordinator O Panneerselvam and Joint Coordinator K Palaniswami said in a statement that the decision to field the candidates to Sulur, Aravakurichi, Tirupprankundram and Ottapidaram (SC) was taken by the party’s Parliamentary Board.
Palaniswami is the chief minister of the state while Panneerselvam is his deputy. The two leaders named VP Kandasamy (Sulur), VV Senthilnathan (Aravakurichi), S Muniyandi (Tirupparankundram) and P. Mohan to Oddapidaram as the party’s nominees.
Among the Makkal Needhi Maiam candidates is 65-year-old G Mayilsami, an organic farming enthusiast and a social activist. He will contest from Sulur constituency. In Aravakkurichi, S Mohanraj will be contesting on MNM ticket.
Ottapidaram (reserved constituency) has been allocated to MNM’s alliance Valarum Thamizhagam, a smaller political outfit. M Gandhi, who has contested in previous elections, has been chosen as the party’s candidate.

The by-polls for the 18 vacant assembly seats out of 22 took place on April 18 with the second phase of Lok Sabha elections. The remaining four constituencies – Tirupparankundram, Sulur, Aravakkurichi, and Ottapidaram will go to polls on May 19.
Now that the last date for filing of nominations ended, intense campaigning by top leaders will commence immediately.
