Brother Movie Review
Karthik is a carefree and socially oblivious young man with simple desires, leading a life of easygoing joy. However, his impulsive actions disrupt the wedding plans of his elder sister, Anandhi, throwing their family into disarray. Now, Karthik must restore harmony in the family, all while dealing with his own budding relationship with Archana. Brother is a classic family drama that delivers on its promise without overstaying its welcome, creating a story that balances humor and heartwarming family moments.
The film establishes its tone early on, with Karthik (played by Jayam Ravi), a law school dropout whose enthusiasm frequently lands him in trouble. His lack of social awareness combined with his inherent sense of justice causes ripple effects that impact his family. Though the story doesn’t rely heavily on logic, it offers a colorful and light-hearted tone supported by a solid cast of supporting characters, each contributing to the humor and drama without straying into unnecessary territory.
Karthik is an impulsive character with an obsessive need to set things right, which often backfires. When his well-intentioned intervention results in an apartment demolition fiasco, his frustrated parents send him to stay with Anandhi (played by Bhumika Chawla) in Ooty. Here, he continues to wreak havoc unintentionally—from interrupting family dinners to mishaps at his new jobs as a hospital bouncer and physical training instructor. His impulsiveness reaches a peak when he offends Anandhi’s father-in-law, a proud and egoistic collector (played by Rao Ramesh). The ensuing family rift forces Karthik to confront his actions and begin a journey to repair the damaged relationships. With Archana (Priyanka Mohan) acting as a bridge, Karthik learns the importance of understanding and self-restraint.
The film’s comedy is gentle, more of a consistent chuckle than outright laughter. Director M. Rajesh delivers a mix of classic commercial elements—Jayam Ravi’s energetic presence, lighthearted humor from Keshav (VTV Ganesh), vibrant song-and-dance sequences, and the glam appeal of Priyanka Mohan. The first half is entertaining and sets up the family dynamics well, though the latter half shifts into more dramatic territory, with emotional outbursts that can feel a bit melodramatic. However, the cast’s engaging performances keep the audience invested.
Jayam Ravi leads the film with his expressive range, from joy and obliviousness to self-awareness and introspection. Bhumika Chawla brings warmth as the supportive sister, while Rao Ramesh shines as the overbearing collector, balancing humor with his formidable presence. Harris Jayaraj’s soundtrack adds flair, particularly with “Makkamishi,” a track that stands out in the musical lineup. Brother delivers a family drama with moments of laughter, warmth, and reflection, even if the dramatic shifts feel slightly exaggerated.
