Amid speculation over superstar Rajinikanth joining politics, BJP national secretary H Raja said he is a “popular” personality and is welcome to join the party.
Union Minister of state for shipping Pon Radhakrishnan too has said the BJP would welcome Rajinikanth’s entry into politics or into the party.
“He has every right to form a political party or join politics. But so far he has not taken a firm stand. So we have to wait and see,” Raja said
“Anybody willing to join the BJP under Narendra Modi’s leadership” is welcome, he added.
Meanwhile, Rajinikanth did not say “no” and there is a scramble to read between the lines. Rumours swirled earlier this year that the actor could float a new party backed by the BJP, which is seeking to deepen its footprint in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2019 national election.
“Whatever I had to say I said, now I have nothing more to say,” was the actor’s response when he was asked about Pon Radhakrishnan saying the BJP “welcomes” him.
BJP is trying to “woo” Tamil superstar Rajinikanth in its bid to make inroads into Tamil Nadu, the Communist Party of India (CPI) alleged on Wednesday.
But Rajinikanth is a sensible man who understood the cultural history of Tamil Nadu, which would not accept the “BJP brand of politics”, CPI national secretary D Raja said.
