The Nungambakkam police on Friday booked Tamil film director P Bharathiraja’s son and actor Manoj K Bharathi for drunk driving.
He was driving an SUV while being under the influence of alcohol, sources said. “Manoj was driving a BMW on the Sterling Road when he was caught,” sources said.
It is learnt that he was booked under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 (driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol).
He was fined Rs 2,500 and the police also seized his car. He was allowed to go home after that.
Manoj made his acting debut in the 1999 Tamil film Taj Mahal, directed by his father. His leading lady was Riya Sen, who was making her debut as well.
Subsequently, Manoj appeared in films such as Samuthiram, alongside Sarath Kumar and Murali, and in Kadal Pookkal, directed by his father, sharing screen space with Murali once again.
The films, though they became box office failures, received much critical acclaim, especially Kadal Pookkal, for which Bharathiraja was awarded the national film award for best screenplay.
