Autos start plying in rural TN, permission given to saloons in urban areas too

With the Tamil Nadu government permitting autorickshaws and cycle rickshaws to ply in non-containment areas across the state — excluding the Greater Chennai Police limits — from today, autos in the State started plying from this morning.

The rickshaws shall ply with only one passenger, between 7am and 7pm. In a statement issued here, the government said, auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are allowed to ply in the state carrying only one passenger.

The vehicles can ply between 7 am and 7 pm. Both the driver and the passenger should wear a mask. According to a circular issued by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, autos and cycle rickshaws will not be allowed in containment zones, while auto drivers and cycle rickshaw drivers living in containment zones will not be allowed to resume operations in the State.

In a set of directions, the drivers have been asked to carry hand sanitisers with them for the use of passengers, besides making it mandatory for for both the passengers and the drivers to wear face masks while travelling.

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Friday declared 517 localities across Chennai as non-containment zones after no new cases were recorded in the areas in 14 days.

Auto drivers and cyclerickshaw riders living in Chennai police limits and containment zones, where COVID-19 positive cases were on the higher side, have placed a demand to operate autos.

Meanwhile, the government today allowed hairdressing outlets in urban areas too function. Earlier this week, the government gave permission to saloons only in rural areas to operate.
