Athi Varadar: HC sets up special panel, seeks report; 3 lakh devotees in Kanchi

On the 37th day of His rising from the holy tank, Lord Athi Varadar today gave darshan to devotees in a special silver kavacham alankaram, with pink silk and floral arrangements.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court has formed a two-member expert panel to inspect and report the present condition of the Anantha Saras tank from where Athi Varadar idol is taken out once every 40 years.

The committee of Assistant Solicitor General M Karthikeyan and Pleader for HR&CE department M Maharajan would visit the tank on August 7 and submit a report before the court by August 8.

The order was passed by Justice P D Audikesavalu on a plea by K Asokan seeking direction to the officials to clean, desilt, deepen and renovate the tank before the idol is restored there.

With over three lakh devotees thronging the Sri Devarajaswamy temple to worship Athi Varadar on Monday, the Kancheepuram district administration asked a section of devotees to wait for darshan today.

“This was done keeping the safety of devotees in mind. The police asked those who had not entered the temple or queues to stay overnight,” Collector P Ponniah said.

The Devarajaswamy temple in Kancheepuram district near Chennai is the center of attraction since the past one month. People are trying their level best to get a glimpse of Lord Athi Varadar placed in a standing position.
