“Anjaamai” Tamil Movie Review

A political drama that exposes the flaws within academia.

யதார்த்த நாயகன் விதார்த்!!

“Anjaamai” bravely champions the cause of ordinary people by challenging unempathetic policies crafted by bureaucrats and politicians. True to its title, the film fearlessly critiques the disconnect between policy-makers and the common man.

While many films have explored the pressures of the education system on students, “Anjaamai” uniquely emphasizes how this system places immense stress on parents, often more so than on the students themselves. . However, “Anjaamai” goes beyond personal struggles to address the broader systemic issues at play.

The story begins with Arunthavam (Krithik Mohan) bursting into a police station in Dindigul’s Gandhigramam, demanding action against the government while threatening to shoot himself with a cop’s gun. Inspector Manikkam (Rahman) intervenes and listens to the distressed Class 12 student. Arunthavam, a top performer in his district’s Class 10 exams, explains how the NEET exam has traumatized his family, highlighting its bias against students from poor backgrounds, especially those from Tamil Nadu.

Director Subburaman, along with the film’s creator and producer Dr. Thirunavukkaras, deserves praise for their insightful portrayal of the NEET enrollment and examination process. This detailed depiction ensures that the audience stays engaged as the narrative critiques the relentless pressure on students. “Anjaamai” also demystifies the perceived necessity of coaching centers for cracking NEET.

The heartfelt performances by Vidharth and Vani Bhojan will resonate deeply with parents of students preparing for NEET and other competitive exams. Vidharth, as Sarkar—a koothu artist and farmer—delivers a moving portrayal of a father determined to secure an education for his child despite his own limitations. Subburaman crafts scenes filled with drama and emotion, such as Sarkar quitting koothu and the challenges of Arunthavam’s exam center allotment, to effectively engage the audience.

Despite a predictable plot, the film’s strength lies in its execution. Rahman shines as both a principled policeman and a lawyer, delivering one of his most compelling performances. Krithik Mohan impresses as Arunthavam, supported by notable performances from Rekha Nair and former IAS officer Balachandran as Justice Sundaram. “Anjaamai” stands as a powerful and poignant critique of the education system’s impact on families.
