Amid DMK’s opposition, Assembly passes Bill to abolish direct election of Mayor

During the last day of the Assembly session today, the DMK staged walk out, protesting CM J Jayalalithaa’s remarks on party president M Karunanidhi in Katchatheevu issue.

Meanwhile, amid opposition from the DMK, the Assembly adopted changes made to the Bill, which proposed amendments to the municipal act to ensure election of mayors by councillors and not by the people as is the practice at present.

The Bill was passed after Speaker P Dhanapal made head count and found majority of members supporting it. Later, the Assembly was adjourned sine die.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Rural Development S P Velumani moved the bill in the state Assembly in this regard , the Tamil Nadu Municipal Corporation Laws (Amendment Act), 2016 to give effect to the government
