The district secretaries meet of the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is scheduled for 8 February to discuss the 2019 general elections.
The meeting assumes significance in the light of reports that the ruling party will form an electoral front under its leadership for the Lok Sabha polls.
There is speculation that the proposed front would comprise a host of parties, including the BJP, the PMK and the DMDK.
Bracing for the big election, the leadership has called for the meeting of district secretaries to discuss poll preparedness and ‘strengthening’ booth committees.
Senior minister D Jayakumar said the party would like to see election in a single phase in the state, given the good law and order situation.
Soon after the AIADMK issued a notification for the party cadre to file intent of interest application to contest in the Lok Sabha polls for all the 40 constituencies in the state from Feb 4 to Feb 10, many are keen to fight in the elections this time round.
V Maitreyan, Rajya Sabha member, has expressed his wish to contest from either South or Central Chennai constituency.
Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s son P Ravindranath Kumar had filed papers on Monday expressing his interest to contest from Theni – his home constituency.
The alliance talks between the AIADMK and BJP to face the Lok Sabha polls together are reportedly in an advanced stage. The alliance will be announced once the seat-sharing among the other parties, which will be part of the alliance, is resolved, an Express report said, quoting a senior AIADMK leader.
