All eyes on Amit Shah’s visit, tight security in Chennai

In view of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to the Chennai, elaborate arrangements have been made by the City police.

Sources said all arrangements are in place to ensure that all functions in which he is participating on Saturday and Sunday pass off smoothly. Over 7,000 police personnel will be on duty. Shah is under Z-Plus security cover.

However, no extensive traffic diversions will be put in place. Traffic will be only stopped briefly to ensure the passage of the Home Minister’s convoy, said a senior police officer.

Shah will inaugurate a series of developmental projects and meeting representatives of the Tamil Nadu BJP unit and senior leaders of ally AIADMK.

The senior BJP leader’s visit to Chennai comes as political parties in the state have sounded the poll bugle for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections set to be held in May 2021.

Since it was Shah’s first visit to the city after L Murugan took over as the BJP State Unit Chief, the party would accord a grand reception right from the airport by following COVID-19 social distancing norms.

Shah was also expected to meet Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, who were the joint coordinator and Coordinator of the ruling AIADMK respectively, on further strengthening the alliance.
