Alagiri meets Karunanidhi, says ‘Kalaignar is fine’

For the second time within a week, expelled DMK leader and party chief M Karunandhi’s elder son MK Alagiri Friday called on his ailing father in Chennai and said the 92-year-old leader was “fine.”

“Thalaivar (leader) is fine,” Alagiri told reporters after meeting Karunanidhi at his Gopalapuram residence in Chennai.

Last week too, Alagiri called on his father, who is indisposed due to a drug allergy. DMK sources said Alagiri was with his father for an hour.

Alagiri has not visited his father for quite sometime after he was expelled from the party in 2014 though he had called on his mother Dayalu Ammal, who is not doing well.

Recently,  Karunanidhi declared his younger son MK Stalin as his political heir. “From his prison days, where he faced a lot of hardships, he has worked very hard and elevated himself systematically to the position of future president (of DMK). In that aspect, he remains my political heir apparent”, he told in a recent magazine interview.

Asked about Alagiri, he said, “One has to be happy with what is there and keep progressing, and feeling about those who are not in the party now will impede the journey.”
