A crucial meeting of the ruling AIADMK’s office-bearers and members took at the party headquarters at Royapettah in Chennai today.
Presided over by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, the joint coordinator and coordinator of the party, respectively, the meet was called after there were voices in the party for single leadership.
“Various key issues were discussed and party members were asked to follow discipline and not to speak party matters in open,” sources said and added that Ministers O S Manian and C Ve Shanmugam did not attend the crucial meet.
The meeting was the first such event after the results of the Lok Sabha polls and Assembly by-polls, in which the party performed badly. Out of 22 Lok Sabha constituencies that it contested, the AIADMK bagged just one seat, while in the Assembly by-elections, it captured 9 out of 22 seats.
Minutes before the meeting began, veteran film actor and former Saidapet MLA, Radha Ravi, rejoined the party in t he presence of the Chief Minister at his Greenways Road residence in the city.
At present, powers within the party are divided between Panneerselvam and Palaniswami in the absence of a general secretary. While both OPS and EPS are in charge of the party, cadre feel a single leadership is the way forward. The meeting was also likely to decide on dates for general body meeting.
Outside the headquarters, posters urging Palanisamy to take over AIADMK chief has been put up. As the party cadres started to gather in large numbers outside the headquarters, the traffic was slow moving.
On Tuesday, Palaniswami urged parents and employers in Tamil Nadu to help make the state child labour-free by taking a vow to not employ children for work. The CM’s appeal was made ahead of World Day Against Child Labour which is observed on June 12 every year.
