The party offices of AIADMK, DMK and MNM were buzzing with action today as part of the poll preparations.
While the ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam started interviewing aspiring candidates, DMK held a meeting of its district secretaries, MLAs and MPs.
Makkal Needhi Maiam of Kamal Haasan too interviewed wannabe contestants. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam who are also the co-coordinator and coordinator of AIADMK respectively constituted the panel that interviewed the candidates.
DMK president M K Stalin today said the list of constituencies allotted to the alliance parties will be announced tonight or by tomorrow morning.
He added the DMK legislators are planning to approach the Election Commission asking it to conduct bypolls in the Ottapidaram, Aravakuruchi and Thiruparankundram constituencies as well.
Kamal’s party was on Sunday allotted battery torch symbol by the Election Commission. He said in a tweet: “MNM thanks the Election Commission for granting us the ‘Battery Torch’ symbol for the forthcoming elections. So appropriate. MNM will endeavour to be the ‘Torch-Bearer’ for a new era in TN and Indian politics.
The actor launched his political party MNM last year and had already announced they would be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to reporters last month, he had said that the party would release the names of Lok Sabha candidates in phases and that youth will get preference in the selection.
Earlier this month, the MNM issued applications for candidates to contest the polls. “We have so far received 1,137 applications, and the interview process will begin from March 11. We are confident of selecting the right candidates. I will be contesting as well, and will soon announce where (I will contest) from,” he added.
