Acid attack on Income Tax official in Chennai

A 23-year-old staff of the Income Tax department was attacked on Tuesday night with acid by unidentified persons who knocked the door of the victim’s flat around 9 pm in Chennai.

Mohit Pathak has been admitted to a private hospital in the city with 40 per cent burns suffered in the attack on Tuesday night at his apartment in Central Revenue Quarters at Anna Nagar, they said.

The hockey player, identified Mohit, is working as a clerical staff in the income tax department here. He is a member of I-T department’s hockey team. He hails from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh.

Mohit suffered burn injuries on his face, stomach and back, police sources said. On hearing his screams, the neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital.

“The assailant first threw the acid on Pathak’s chest and when the victim ran inside his flat wriggling in pain, he followed and emptied the rest on his back, below the neck,” a Police official said.

Mohit called up his coach Swaminathan, who came to the house and took him to a private hospital. There were about eight security guards on night duty at the I-T quarters. The entry and exit gates had CCTV cameras but they were not functional, police said.
