Eight people, including two women, died on the spot and 40 others sustained injuries when two buses collided with each other near Salem during the wee hours of today.
According to reports, a private bus proceeding to Dharmapuri was trying to avoid a stationary lorry, when its driver lost control of the vehicle.
The bus jumped the median and collided head-on with an omni bus heading towards Palakkad from Bengaluru. The omni bus capsized in the impact of the accident which took place at 2 am.
The bus turned turtle, resulting in the death of seven people, they added. The police rushed to the spot and started rescue operations.
Salem District Collector Rohini also visited the accident spot. The injured persons were admitted to a government hospital in Salem, the police added.
Those travelling in both the buses suffered injuries and were rushed to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital. Some of them were later admitted to private hospitals.
Suramangalam Police have registered a case and are investigating.
