5 districts contribute to 50% of TN’s Covid cases

At least 50 per cent of the 5,185 new Covid-19 cases in Tamil Nadu on Friday were from five districts – Chennai (1288), Coimbatore (397), Chengalpet (343), Salem (295) and Thanjavur (240).

The cumulative case tally reached 6,46,128, while the 68 deaths reported in the last 24 hours pushed the death toll to 10,120.

Testing of samples inched towards the one lakh mark with 97,087 being done, aggregating to 81,41,534 so far. The number of recoveries outnumbered new infections.

The active cases stood at 44,197, with 5,357 patients getting discharged from various hospitals and cumulatively 5,91,811 people have got cured, the health department said in a bulletin.

As 5,088 more persons tested positive on Thursday, the State’s overall case count climbed to 6,40,943. There was a marginal dip in fresh infections in Chennai as 1,295 persons tested positive.

There were 448 cases in Coimbatore, 363 in Chengalpattu and 362 in Salem. The number of cases stayed high in Thanjavur at 239, while Tiruvallur recorded 194 cases and Tiruppur 173.

All districts in the south recorded cases below 100. Kanyakumari topped the table with 96 followed by Madurai (93).

Meanwhile, a majority of cases in the Central districts were in Thanjavur (240) followed by Thiruvarur (113) and Trichy (81). Active cases in the zone were 4330 compared to 4478 in the South.
