A Mahila Court in Thanjavur has sentenced four youths to life imprisonment for raping a 25-year-old Rajasthani woman in 2018.
The convicts were S Dinesh (24), M Vasanth (21), S Purushothaman (19), and S Anbarasan (19), all residents of Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district.
The prosecution said the woman, who was working in a private bank in Delhi, landed at Kumbakonam town by train at 11 pm on December 1, 2018 to attend a training programme at the bank headquarters in Kumbakonam.
Since she did not get an auto rickshaw at the railway station, she walked towards Kamarajar street where she managed to hire one. The woman asked the driver to take her to a women’s hostel where she was put up. But the driver took a detour through Chettimandapam bypass to fleece more fare from her.
On the way there, she called a friend when she suspected that the vehicle was taking the wrong route. The autorickshaw driver asked her to alight from the vehicle on the bypass road. Subsequently, the woman started walking along the bypass road where she found two persons on a motorcycle and sought their help to reach her destination.
However, the duo took her to a secluded place on the Nachiyarkovil bypass road and called two other friends to come to the spot. All four sexually assaulted her and one of them took her in an autorickshaw from the Nachiyarkoil road to drop her at the place from where she was picked up.
A special police team arrested all the four and the auto driver.
At the end of hearing, the court sentenced them to life imprisonment. The autorickshaw driver was sentenced to seven years imprisonment.
