An assistant director and two others died in an accident at the Indian 2 shooting site near Poonamallee in Chennai late on Wednesday. Ten persons were injured in the accident at a private studio located at Nazarathpet.
Kamal Haasan posted on Twitter: “I have faced and overcome many accidents, but today’s is the most horrific one. I lost three colleagues. The distress of their family members will be many times greater than my own pain. I share their grief as one of them. My deepest condolences to them.”
Initial reports said that director Shankar also fractured a leg, but the rumours were later shot down. The director’s personal assistant Madhu, 29, and assistant director Krishna, 34, died in the accident.
Sources said Krishna, an assistant director, and production assistants Madhu and Chandran died after a crane that was in use during the shoot collapsed. More than 10 persons who were injured in the incident have been admitted to various government hospitals.
Kamal said, “Today’s accident is the most horrific I have seen in my film career. I have lost three colleagues but my pain pales in comparison to the grief of those who have lost their loved ones. My deepest sympathies to them.”
Senior police officers rushed to the spot and an inquiry is underway. A case has been registered and investigations are on. The much-hyped sequel of Shankar’s 1996 hit film was officially launched a year ago but the shooting wasn’t taking place in a brisk manner.
The accident happened while the set was being erected. The location of the accident is said to be at EVP Studios in the town of Poonamallee which is on the outskirts of Chennai.
