2018 Movie Review

Rarely do such discerning films grace the screens, creating an uproar at the box office! Drawing inspiration from the devastating 2018 floods in “God’s Own Country,” this film portrays the struggles and challenges faced by those who endured the wrath of nature when the rain poured relentlessly, resulting in extensive damage to both lives and property.

Presented as a gripping survival thriller, the movie delicately showcases the ordeals of the affected individuals and the heroic efforts of those who stepped forward to rescue them. Weaving together the stories of a young army deserter, a determined television reporter, an IT professional, a tourist taxi driver, a fisherman and his family, and countless others residing in the vicinity, the director masterfully crafts a coherent narrative that never loses its grip on the audience’s attention, despite the vast ensemble cast. The painstaking effort invested in this film transports viewers to the very location, as if watching the events unfold from their own windows while rain plays the role of an uninvited disruptor.

The film’s emotional core is epitomized by the struggles of a couple raising a differently abled son, their eventual rescue, and a heart-stopping scene where a blind man narrowly escapes certain death, while the one saving him succumbs to the unforgiving floods. These moments are sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats, moved to tears.

The brilliant cinematography by Akihl George and the slick editing by Chaman Chacko raise the production to new heights of excellence. Special mention must be made of Vishnu Govind’s remarkable audiography and Nobin Paul’s evocative background score, which both contribute immensely to the film’s impact.

This profoundly affecting movie lingers in the minds of viewers long after they leave the theater—a testament to its enduring power. The talented cast, including Kunjacho Boban, Tovino Thomas, Asif Ali, Lal, Narein, Vineeth Srinivasan, Kalaiyarasan, and Aparna Balamurali, deliver exceptional performances under the expert guidance of writer and director Jude Anthany Joseph.
