In a horrific crime in the heart of the city, at least 22 men including security guards, elevator operators and plumbers at an apartment complex at Ayanavaram in Chennai sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl with a hearing disorder for more than seven months.
Police have arrested 18 of the suspects and are searching for others involved in the crime, which has sent shock waves across the country.
The victim belongs to a north Indian family settled in the city. The complainant alleged that her daughter was sexually assaulted by around 15 men multiple times, between January 15 and July 5.
According to the complaint, lift operator Ravi took her to isolated places in the apartment, such as the basement, the public washroom, terrace and the gym, and abused her.
Reports said the lift operator in the apartment complex at Secretariat Colony, identified as Ravi (66) had taken her to an isolated place and raped her.
Later, he called a couple of others from outside and they had allegedly raped her when they were under the influence of drugs and alcohol and recorded the whole incident to threaten her not to tell anyone about it. Due to this, the girl could not tell anybody.
The matter came to light when the girl told her sister, who was visiting from Delhi that she had a stomach ache. When she narrated her trauma, the family registered a complaint with the all-women police station in Ayanavaram.
