Seventeen people were killed as a KSRTC bus crashed with a lorry at Avinashi near Coimbatore today morning. The bus bound to Ernakulam was returning from Bengaluru. Around 20 people were injured in the accident.
The incident took place around 3.15 am when a lorry rammed into the KSRTC bus. According to preliminary reports, the Kerala registered lorry, which was coming from the opposite direction, was attempting to overtake when it lost control, ran over the divider and rammed into the bus.
The bus has been completely damaged in the accident, especially the right side of the vehicle. The state-run Volvo bus was on its way to Bengaluru from Ernakulam when it met with an accident.
The bus left for Bengaluru from Ernakulam on Monday and was suppossed to return by Tuesday night. However, the journey got postponed to Wednesday night due to lack of passengers.
Tirupur Superintendent of Police confirmed that 17 bodies have been recovered and 22 people are injured. According to the officer, two or three people were still stuck in the bus and rescue operations were on.
Tirupur Collector said that the accident took place early morning. “The container which hit the bus was carrying tiles. Recovered bodies has been sent for postmortem. About 17 to 18 bodies have been recovered, the final number is yet to be determined,” the Collector added.
