There has been a 14% increase in the number of Covid-19 active cases in the city since last week, and almost two of five infected persons in Tamil Nadu are currently in Chennai and its three neighbouring districts.
Chengalpet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram along with Chennai have 18,193 active cases. A total of 2,008 people tested positive in these districts in the last 24 hours, 1,306 in Chennai alone.
Tamil Nadu on Tuesday reported 5,017 new COVID-19 cases taking the overall count of cases in the state to 6,30,408. According to the state health department, the total count includes 45,279 active cases.
It said that 5,548 patients have recovered from the infection in the last 24 hours taking the overall count of recovered patients across the state to 5,75,212.
The department said 71 patients have succumbed to virus across the state taking the death toll to 9,917.
The number of samples tested was 81,128 and 71 deaths were reported. In Chennai, the number of infections rose by 1,306 and 947 Covid-19 patients were discharged to leave the number of active cases at 12,929.
Some of the districts that reported higher number of new cases include Coimbatore – 434; Salem – 326; Chengalpattu – 283; Thiruvallur – 263 and Thanjavur – 224, according to the Health department.
