The Chennai Corporation on Tuesday invited expressions of interest from companies to distribute mosquito nets to residents of localities along the city’s major waterways.
In yet another pro-poor initiative, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has asked the Corporation officials to provide mosquito nets free of cost to slum dwellers living on the banks of waterbodies in the city.
In a press release, the civic body has said that the Chief Minister wanted the slum dwellers to be provided with mosquito nets, to ensure that they were not affected by diseases spread by mosquito.
"Following this, the Corporation has planned to distribute cost-free mosquito nets to people living in slums situated on the banks of water bodies in Chennai," said the release.
The corporation said that manufactures of mosquito nets whose sales is more than Rs 10 crore a year should approach the civic body’s health officer before March 13 with models of their mosquito nets.
